Happy Birthday…. Movie Directors Edition

birthday-cake-757102_1280I know that we’re a library, and as such we are typically associated with books.  However – we are interested in all kinds of information in all sorts of formats – including movies.  We have noticed that there is a long list of movie directors celebrating (or would have celebrated) their birthday in August!  I’d like to take a quick moment to highlight a just a few….

Sam Mendes celebrates on August 1st.  He brought us such great films as American Beauty which won several Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards, the Operation Desert Storm movie Jarhead, and the James Bond action film Skyfall.

Cecil B. DeMille was born on August 12, 1881 in Ashfield, Massachusetts.  You can see him playing himself in the celebrated 1950 Billy Wilder film Sunset Boulevard.

Sir Alfred Hitchock was born on August 13, 1899.  We have several of his films here at the library, including:  Rear Window starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, Psycho starring Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins, and To Catch a Thief starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 and directed last years critically acclaimed film Selma.  She was the first black female director nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for this film.

Other directors born in August include the very familiar names of James Cameron, Robert Redford, and Tim Burton.

Happy Birthday!

  1. Thanks for this great info. Maybe sometimes you can do one on motion picture composers such as John Wiiliams et al
