Stranger than Fiction!: NL’s non-fiction book club

Truth is stranger than fiction  Non-Fiction Book Club @ Nevins Library

If you enjoy reading non-fiction, you’ll love our newest book club–

“Stranger than Fiction” will meet at the library on the 2nd Monday of the month from 7-8pm.  We’ll read across all topics within nonfiction (ex. Biographies, True Crime, Travelogues) except for religion and politics, because after all, we want to start a discussion, not a fight!  Some months we’ll be discussing a single title, other months there will be a theme and a list of suggested books on that topic from which participants can choose.

Please join us for our first meeting on Monday September 12 in the Trustee’s Room at the Nevins Library.  Come prepared to share a favorite non-fiction book with us and to discuss which topics we will cover (and when) in the future.

For more information, contact Tatjana 978-686-4080 x12.

NML Thursday Evening Book Group

The Thursday Evening Book Group meets on the 1st Thursday of the month from 7-9pm to discuss titles along a theme.

Light

“Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark. Begin at the beginning. Tell…a story. Make some light.”

-Kate DiCamillo

Join us to read four novels that feature the concepts of light & dark, good & evil, happiness and hatred.  Contemporary and classic fiction are included in this collection of literary tales.

The next meeting is on Thursday April 7th and we will be discussing The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian.

In 1955 Florence, Francesca Rosati is brutally murdered.  A serial killer is at work, preying on the Rosati family. The detective assigned to the case wonders if there is a connection between this gruesome vendetta and the family’s experience in the war.  The story shifts to 1943, to a lush Tuscan estate owned by the Rosatis, which is a magnet for Nazis, especially those interested in collecting the type of historical artifacts found there.

For a full listing of titles and dates for the Spring Series, click here.

You may pick up books at the previous meeting, or you may get them at the Main Desk any time the Library is open.    To confirm dates, book selections, or for more information call the Library at 978-686-4080 ext. 10.

NML Book Group: Romance

October is National Reading Group Month.  In the spirit of  celebrating the joy of shared reading,  we’ll be posting info about the various book groups at the Nevins Library throughout this month.

In all romance novels the plot revolves around the love relationship and the inevitable happy ending but contrary to popular opinion, they are not all alike.  Romance novels may have any tone or style, be set in any location and time with varying levels of sensuality-ranging from sweet to scorching hot.  Not just boy meets girl, some even feature vampires, werewolves, and extraterrestrials.

Some of the sub-genres that will be discussed include action/adventure, historical (regency, medieval, highlander, Victorian, etc), fantasy/futuristic, suspense/thriller/mystery, paranormal, erotica, western, humorous and contemporary.

The Romance Book Club meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm.  Copies of the tImage of itemitle for discussion are made available at the Circulation Desk a month prior to each meeting.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday November 3rd at 7pm and the book discussion will be on “Luckiest Lady in London” by Sherry Thomas.

New members are always welcome.  For more information and to register, contact Pat Graham at 978-686-4080 ext. 16 or pgraham@mvlc.org.

NML Book Group: Thursday Evening

October is National Reading Group Month.  In the spirit of  celebrating the joy of shared reading,  we’ll be posting info about the various book groups at the Nevins Library throughout this month…

The Thursday Evening Book Group meets on the 1st Thursday of the month from 7-9pm to discuss titles along a theme.

Fall Series: Cowboys & Gunfighters: An American Tradition

The glory of the old west is an integral part of the American story.  Books and movies are in large part responsible for our view of this important sub-culture.  But the image of the cowboy is changing in literature, and we will read five titles that show the many “faces” of the American cowboy.  Next year we may tackle the related topic of the Native American Indian in our Fall Series…

The next meeting is on Thursday November 5th and we’ll be discussing the classic Western author Zane Grey’s Riders of the Purple Sage.   Initially published in 1912 and the first of Zane Grey’s many bestsellers, this stirring tale of adventure in the high country established the prototype for western novels of the twentieth century. The plot’s focus is a proud young heroine who’s determined to defend her Utah ranch. She stands alone against the villains who rustle and stampede her cattle —until a stranger rides into the territory.

For a full listing of titles and dates for the Fall and Spring Series, click here.

You may pick up books at the previous meeting, or you may get them at the Main Desk any time the Library is open.    To confirm dates, book selections, or for more information call the Library at 978-686-4080 ext. 10.
