Holiday Gift Book Suggestions from Staff, Part 2

It’s not too late to support the Friends of the Library in their annual Barnes & Noble bookfair.  You can still help the Friends, through December 10th, by ordering books at BN.COM/bookfairs and entering bookfair ID #11678927 at check out.

Here are seven more titles staff suggest for holiday book giving:

Image of itemLinda, from Technical Services, is excited to give a history-loving relative Sonia Pernall’s new biography, CLEMENTINE:  THE LIFE OF MRS. WINSTON CHURCHILL.  This well-received, thoroughly-researched biography shows just how fascinating, powerful and complex Clementine was in her own right as well as being Winston’s faithful champion.

Image of itemFor kids, Kathy, head of the Children’s Department, spoke enthusiastically about the WINGS OF FIRE series by Tui T. Sutherland.  This thrilling fantasy adventure series is just the thing to grab the attention and imagination of all young readers — reluctant or avid — especially so for the young dragon fan in your life.

Sharon, an artist and a Reference Librarian, recommends CLASS DISTINCTIONS:  Dutch Painting in the Age of Rembrandt and Vermeer by Ronni Baer, the beautifully-rendered art book and companion to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts current exhibit.

Sarah, head of Readers’ Services, absolutely “loooved” Jenny Lawson’s FURIOUSLY HAPPY, a funny book about horrible things.  Blogger and New York Times bestselling author Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness with laugh-out-loud humor, kicking the stigma to the gutter.

Image of itemFor the adventure-lover in your life, Kirsten, head of Reference Services, heartily recommends IN THE KINGDOM OF ICE by Hampton Sides.  This a phenomonly gripping account of George Washington De Long’s doomed 1879 expedition to the North Pole.   Click here to see a previous blog post about this title.

Image of itemTracy, from Reader’s Services, has a “go to” book for gifts and reading suggestions:   EIGHT IN THE BOX by Raffi Yessayan.  This twisting, chilling mystery will engross you to the thrilling end!

Tatjana, from Reference Services, suggests the big and beautiful coffee-table book, VINTAGE FASHION COMPLETE by Nicky Albrechtsen.  This is a gorgeous pictorial guide of fashion through the decades and will be sure to please the fashionista in your life.

Holiday Gift Book Suggestions from Staff, Part 1

The holiday season is upon us and the annual Friends of the Library Barnes & Noble Bookfair is today, Saturday December 5th. The Friends of the Nevins Library will have a gift-wrapping station at the Barnes & Noble in Salem, NH, to help us get in the mood and ready for the holidays.  Click here to get a voucher coupon to present upon purchase.

Longtime auto writer columnist for the Eagle Tribune, Jeffrey “Motor Mouth” Zygmont, will also be helping us celebrate today at the Barnes & Noble store in Salem, NH.  Zygmont will be sharing poems from his new book, “White Mountain Poems” about his years of experience hiking, rock climbing, skiing, and just tooling about the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

To help you find just the right book for the reader(s) in your life, we’ve asked around the library and have gathered up an eclectic list of favorite books that Nevins Library staff recommend for gifts:

Image of itemRalph, one of our trusty Trustees, suggests Robert Parker’s THE BRIDGE by Robert Knott for fans of gritty Westerns, mystery or Parker’s style of writing.

Pat, from Readers’ Services, suggests all Bill O’Reilly’s books and KILLING JESUS in particular for a riveting historical account of the events leading up to Jesus’s death and how the world was changed forevermore.

Image of itemFor those who read for atmosphere, Danielle from Reference Services, recommends PLAYING WITH FIRE, an intriguing stand-alone thriller from Tess Gerritsen.  A piece of music starts the reader on a journey that takes you from Brookline to Venice, and makes you question what is real and what is an illusion.

Barbara, the library’s Administrative Assistant  and staff “Den Mother”,  wholeheartedly agrees with Publishers Weekly that Broadway actor Zach Appelman delivers a moving performance in the audio edition of Doerr’s beautiful WWII novel, ALL THE LIGHT WE Image of itemCANNOT SEE.  Get this superb book-on-CD for the commuter in your life!

If visions of sugar plums are too sticky sweet for you, you may enjoy Anna’s (Reference Services) suggestion of satirical Christmas fun in the form of Christopher Moore’s THE STUPIDEST ANGEL.  This “heartwarming tale of Christmas terror” is for fans of off-beat, humorous stories.

Image of itemAnother humorous suggested title, SICK IN THE HEAD by Judd Apatow, comes from Kathleen in the Reference Department.  When asked what book she would recommend as a holiday gift, Kathleen jumped right in with this witty book from  writer and director Apatow on conversations with other big names in the comedy field about life and comedy.

For a gentler read, Gladys, from Readers’ Services, suggests SECRET SISTER: an Amish Christmas Tale by Sarah Price.  A timely yuletide story of love and grace in the face of despair.

Stay tuned for more super staff book suggestions for holiday gifts!…

* Pick up a voucher at the library or visit BN.COM/bookfairs from 12/05/15 to 12/10/15 and enter Bookfair ID 11678927 at checkout to support the Friends of the Library.
